Home/Pool Fence Compliance

Pool Fence Compliance · Adelaide

Pool fence inspections, repairs and new installations to South Australian compliance standards. Pre-sale, pre-tenancy, and routine checks.

Pool fence compliance — get it right, keep your family safe.

Pool fence compliance in South Australia isn't optional, and the rules exist because they save lives. Royale Maintenance handles pool fence inspections, repairs, and new installations across Adelaide — bringing existing fences up to compliance, fixing failed gate hardware, and installing new glass or aluminium fencing where needed.

When you need a pool fence check

  • Selling a property with a pool — SA law requires disclosure of fence compliance status. A failing fence kills sales.
  • Renting out a property with a pool — landlords have legal responsibility for tenant safety. Property managers usually require compliance certification before listing.
  • You've just bought a property with a pool — verify the fence is actually compliant rather than relying on the seller's word.
  • Annual safety check — recommended for every pool owner. Gate hardware especially wears out.
  • After garden work or landscaping — climbable objects (planters, trees, garden furniture) near the fence become compliance issues.

What we check

  • Fence height (minimum 1.2m, measured from finished ground level)
  • No climbable surfaces within 900mm of the outside
  • Gap between fence palings or panels (must be under 100mm)
  • Gap between fence bottom and ground (must be under 100mm)
  • Self-closing and self-latching gate function
  • Gate swings outward (away from pool)
  • Latch position at least 1.5m above ground
  • Pool side of gate free from climbable surfaces
  • Fence rigidity — no panels you can push to bend or flex
  • Hinges and latches in good working order

What we fix

Most pool fence non-compliance comes down to a handful of issues — usually fixable without replacing the whole fence:

  • Replacing worn self-closing hinges (most common failure)
  • Adjusting gate alignment so it latches reliably
  • Replacing magnetic latch mechanisms
  • Removing climbable surfaces (planters, garden seats, BBQs near the fence)
  • Adding mesh panels to close gaps in older fencing
  • Raising sections that have sunk over time
  • Replacing failed or damaged panels

New pool fence installation

If your existing fence is beyond economical repair, we install new fencing to current compliance standards:

  • Aluminium pool fencing — powder-coated, durable, cost-effective, fully compliant
  • Frameless glass pool fencing — premium look, doesn't block views
  • Semi-frameless glass pool fencing — middle-ground option
  • Custom designs to match property aesthetic where required

FAQ

Pool fence compliance questions.

Is my pool fence legally required in South Australia?
Yes. Any pool or spa in SA that holds more than 300mm of water requires a compliant safety barrier under the Development Regulations 2008 and the Building Code of Australia (AS 1926.1-2012). This applies whether the pool is in-ground, above-ground, or even an inflatable pool left up permanently. Penalties for non-compliance can be significant.
What makes a pool fence "compliant" in SA?
Key requirements: minimum 1.2m height, no climbable surfaces within 900mm of the outside, no gaps larger than 100mm (so a child's head can't fit through), self-closing and self-latching gates that swing outward away from the pool, latch height at least 1.5m, and no gaps between the bottom of the fence and the ground over 100mm. The full standard (AS 1926.1) covers more detail — we work to current SA-adopted version.
Do I need a compliance certificate when I sell the house?
Yes. SA law requires the seller to disclose pool fence status when selling a property with a pool or spa. A non-compliant fence can delay or kill a sale, and can result in legal liability if a buyer's child is later injured. We provide pre-sale inspection reports identifying any issues, with quotes to fix.
How often should the fence be checked?
We recommend an annual check, plus immediate inspection after any storm, garden work near the fence, or if gate hardware feels loose. Latches and hinges are the most common failure point — they wear out and stop self-closing/latching reliably. A quick service every year prevents the problem becoming an emergency.
Can you fix an existing pool fence or do I need a new one?
Most pool fences can be brought back to compliance with targeted repairs — replacing hinges, adjusting gate alignment, removing climbable objects, raising sections, or fixing gaps. Full replacement is only needed when the structure itself is failing. We always quote repair-first where it makes sense.
Glass vs aluminium pool fencing — which is better?
Both can be fully compliant. Glass looks premium and doesn't block the view, but costs more and shows water spots. Aluminium (powder-coated tube fencing) is much cheaper, durable, and easier to repair. For most Adelaide backyards, aluminium is the practical choice; glass is worth it for pools that are a major design feature.
