What's actually the difference?
The line between a pergola and a carport is fuzzier than people think. Both are outdoor structures with a roof. The differences come down to purpose, construction strength, and council classification.
Pergola — designed for outdoor living
A pergola is built primarily for entertaining and shade. The roof is often slatted (timber battens), louvred (adjustable), or partially covered with polycarbonate or canvas. The framing is usually lighter than a carport because it doesn't need to support a fully sealed roof or carry shed loads.
You'll typically see pergolas attached to a house over an alfresco area, or freestanding in a backyard near a pool or BBQ area.
Carport — designed for vehicles
A carport is built to keep weather off a car. The roof is fully sealed — almost always Colorbond steel sheeting — and pitched to shed rain. The structure is sized to fit one or two vehicles with clearance for door opening. Floor is concrete or paving.
Because the roof is fully waterproof and load-rated, the framing has to be stronger. This is where the cost can go either way — a basic Colorbond carport with steel posts can be cheaper than a high-end timber pergola with a poly roof.

"Can I just call it a pergola to skip council approval?"
People ask this often. The honest answer: no, and you don't want to. Council classifies structures by what they are, not what you call them. A "pergola" sized for a car, sealed against weather, and used to park vehicles is a carport — and if you build it without approval, you risk a stop-work order, removal at your expense, or problems when you sell the house.
The approval process for either structure is usually straightforward in Adelaide. We handle it for clients regularly and can include the development application paperwork in our quote.
Which one's right for you?
- You need to park a car undercover → Carport.
- You want to entertain outdoors year-round → Pergola, possibly with louvred or sealed roof.
- You want both → Some properties have room for both, with a pergola off the alfresco and a carport at the side of the house. Plenty of Adelaide homes do this.
- You're tight on space → A carport sized just to fit one car is the smaller footprint of the two.
- Budget is tight → Basic carport is usually the cheapest weatherproof outcome.
